PART 1
4-19 July
ABDI SETIAWAN (Indonesia) Abdi is a quiet guy with innocent smile. His self-portrait sculptures, often invoking street life atmosphere, might look cute with their childlike spirit, but they are loaded with very real humanism concerns. It is this combination that first attracted me to his work. There is a peculiar sense of humour, a certain playful lightness even when the work explores grave matters. Hero Acrylic Paint on Fiberglass 64 x 145 x 65 cm | 2011 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
BOB SICK YUDHITA (Indonesia) I met Bob Sick through S. Teddy Darmawan who managed to convince me to visit him in his tiny studio. He was quite a sight: a long-haired skinny guy with tattoo all over his skin, seemingly drunk all the time. The walls of his small room were covered with all sorts of pictures: posters, photos, collages. Paintings of various sizes were everywhere. It was quite overwhelming. He turned out to be a very sweet and friendly guy, and I couldn’t get my mind off his vivacious paintings so I had to go back and bring some to Hong Kong. DB Oil Bar & Acrylic on Canvas 125 x 145cm | 2008 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
EddiE haRA (Indonesia) My first impression of EddiE haRA is this cool and interesting artist with Buddha’s ears, an Indonesian who lives in Basel. His Swiss-Envelope series is fascinating: very spontaneous free-form drawings with socio-political commentaries, delivered with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. I love how in his work everything seems to flow effortlessly, buoyed by his exuberant energy. Post Decorative Syndrome Acrylic on Canvas 180 x 100 cm | 2010 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
HERVÉ MAURY (France) It was raining heavily, and my eyes were swollen into these huge ball. I was feeling miserable. And then there on Hervé’s paintings, big eyes from cute, happy looking animals were staring at me; making an eye contact that soon touched my heart and cheer me up. I found his work to be uplifting and heart- warming, something that we all need – especially living in a place like Hong Kong. 77 - 04 Mixed media on Canvas 100 x 100 cm | 2009 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
I GUSTI NGURAH BUDA (Indonesia) I Gusti Ngurah Buda is amongst the first Indonesian artists I discovered. I visited his temple-like studio in Bali. It was huge, and full of his beautiful paintings. He himself was such a free- spirited happy person with open smile that I immediately taken to. He opened up the wonders of Balinese contemporary art for me. White Network Mixed Media on Canvas 100 x 100 cm | 2006 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
TILO KAISER (Germany) I have known Tilo for years before finally exhibiting his works in my gallery. Year after year, he would show me his new paintings, shared with me his progress, until finally something clicked and I just had to bring his work to Hong Kong. To me, he is this crazy and fun German artist with a great sense of humour. All of these things are reflected in his work, executed skilfully using all sorts of found paper to create unlikely collage works. There is always something refreshingly funny in his work, which I love. Champagne and Chocolate Ice Cream Acrylics and Crayon on Canvas 160 x 120 cm | 2013 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
WONG TONG (Hong Kong) Tong, a young local artist with an old soul, has come a long way since I first met him years ago. His politeness, along with his deep spirituality and calmness strike me as something quite unusual for Hong Kong. He quietly explores various techniques to employ in his works, freely experimenting following his intuition resulting in a lively, diverse body of work. Who 誰 Oil on Canvas 93 x 160 cm | 2014 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
ALFRED KO (Hong Kong) Alfred Ko is a Hong Kong photographer that I met through a friend. Seeing Hong Kong through his eyes in his photographs reminds me of old times, of memories. There is a sense of passing time in his images - a poetic blend of past and present, with a touch of subtle sense of humour that pulls me to his work. McGregor Street Photo print on archival fine art paper 64 x 91.5 cm | 2009 (Also available in 77.5 x 111.5 cm) in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
ANTOINETTE ROZAN (France) I still remember the first time I saw Antoinette’s sculpture: it was of a magnificent pregnant woman in bronze. The fluid lines of the body, the motion implied within the mass, the energy emanates from it... I think of her work as sculptural calligraphy, which also calls to my mind the work of Giacometti. Serenity Bronze 42 x 31 x 31cm | 2005 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
FAUZIE AS'AD (Indonesia) Fauzie is a creative dreamer whose soul is torn between Yogya, his hometown and Liechtenstein, where he has made him home now. Although it was his marble sculptures that attracted me first, it was his whimsically poetic paintings that inspired me to bring his works to Hong Kong. There is an elegance mixture of western and eastern elements in his works that I found particularly compelling. The Thing Like Whatever You Think Acrylic on Canvas 36 x 36 cm | 2009 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
JOEY LEUNG (Hong Kong) Joey is among the most recent Hong Kong artists I discovered. I found Joey to be very devoted to his work, consistently exploring his fascination with fish form. His work is quite unique, and yet highly accessible. The themes in his work are often very close to our daily life, presented in his own peculiar narratives. Fish and Gun – Living 2 Ceramic 42 x 18 x 15 cm | 2014 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
JULIA NEE CHU (China) I met Julia, an elegant Shanghainese artist living in California, at the very beginning of Sin Sin Fine Art. I sensed an unmistakable strength in her abstract paintings that are bursting with vivid colours and powerful energy, while her fluid brush strokes reminded me of calligraphy. I found her work to be unusual, and yet highly accessible. Early Acrylic on Canvas 163 x 122 cm | 2011 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
M. IRFAN (Indonesia) Irfan is a quiet, happy-go-lucky guy who loves to laugh. He loves to travel to find inspirations for his paintings. Bridges attract him as a symbol of connecting points between places and open possibilities: where to go next. I love the surety of his clean, precise lines. His skill in building seemingly three- dimensional structures with his brush strokes is simply amazing. Gerbang (Gate) Acrylic on Canvas 170 x 250 cm | 2013 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
PETER DITTMAR (Germany) Peter is a German artist who lives in Bali for more than three decades. To me, Peter’s works are very German; they tend to be minimalistic with a clean and precise look. In his paintings I sense the old masters sensibility in his play of colours, textures and space. Colour Window No. B Wheatgreen with Yellow Centre Acrylic and Mixed Media on Board 100 x 100 cm | 2008 in Revisit p.1 | 4 July - 19 July 2014 | a group exhibition
PART 2
21 Jul-
9 Aug
ANDY DEWANTORO (Indonesia) I see Andy as a smart metropolitan artist who is very skillful. I love the illusion found in his work: how at first they appear like blurry photographs, but upon closer look it is apparent that they are, in fact, paintings. The subtle sense of movement, even in his architectural paintings, is evocative of transient dreams or fading memories. I found this mesmerising. Silent Waves #1 Acrylics on Canvas 100 x 150 cm | 2013 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug | a group exhibition
HANAFI (Indonesia) I first met Hanafi at Komaneka’s space in Bali, a long time ago in the early start of Sin Sin Fine Art. I just fell in love with his elegant abstract paintings – which reminded me a bit of Tàpies, my all time favorite artist. I immediately felt a strong connection with Hanafi, especially upon witnessing his moving performance that went straight to my heart. I could sense his sincerity in his works, which felt so direct, so genuine, so inspired. The Circle of Bodies and Nature Acrylic on Canvas 135 x 145 cm | 2011 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
LIE FHUNG (Indonesia) Although Fhung, who was born and grew up in Indonesia, has been living in Hong Kong for many years, it wasn’t until two years ago that we met each other. I immediately taken by her big eyes and smile. I love her warmth, her energy and her sincerity. She is a bright, strong artist with delicate sensibility. She works with all her heart: with patience, devotion and perseverance. Focused. The resulting works felt open and light. Dream Archives – Portal #011 Mixed Media (altered KOLO Havana Box, brass, vintage optical lenses, glazed porcelain, binder’s board) 24.8 x 19.7 x 14 cm | 2009 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
PANDE KETUT TAMAN (Indonesia) Pande is a very spiritual Balinese artist whose love of nature is evident in his works, be it a painting, a wooden sculpture, or an installation. I visited his exhibition at Komaneka’s space years ago: it was a very moving installation of a huge face shaped with layers of cotton cloth usually used by women to remove their cosmetics. I still remember it vividly today. Stone Series #26 Watercolor on Paper 110 x 85 cm | 2011 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
RICK LEWIS (U.S.A.) Over 12 years ago, I was introduced to an American Artist Rick Lewis who was doing art residency at The Purnati Culture Center. His studio was located on top of the canyon, surrounded by the sacred temples, very spiritual. What surprised me was that his paintings are direct, deep and elegant only with some simple lines. Springy Banks Mixed media on canvas 122 x 152 cm | 2013 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
VINCENT CAZENEUVE (France) I met the French artist Vincent in Shanghai not a long time ago. I was impressed with his dedication to his work, he dives in completely with all his heart. I think this is reflected in his amazing lacquer artworks that are so rich with organic materials, deeply layered with stories, and irresistibly tactile. Untitled 3 Chinese lacquer on wood, ramie fabric, gold leaf, oxidized bronze leaf, pigments made with concrete powder 164 x 120 cm | 2012 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
ANUSAPATI (Indonesia) When Anusapati’s works were exhibited at Sangkring in Yogyakarta, I happened to be there. I was fascinated by his works and couldn’t get my mind off them, even when I was back in Hong Kong. So I invited him to have a show in Hong Kong and I visited him in Yogyakarta. When I met him, he told me that he would like to get to know me. He said that he thinks slowly, but he works fast. He is quite a thinker, which is not surprising as he teaches in the university. Shadow #6 Charcoal on Paper 72 x 54 cm | 2012 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
BAI XINCHENG (China) I got to know Bai Xincheng through his fellow Chinese artist, Sun Guangyi in Beijing. I found his works to be very interesting, like an old master’s works. The lines appear so free and spontaneous, they felt to me to be very Chinese but also Western at the same time. Captivating! Untitled 36 Lithograph on Paper 79 x 79 cm | 2012 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
DWI SETIANTO (Indonesia) Dwi is an Indonesian artist who lives in Helsinki, a quiet unassuming man. He prefers to work than to talk. There is always a very strong nature element in work, which I think is directly related to his working environment as a gardener. His sound performance with contraptions that he fashioned using the lidi is very powerful. The resulting vibration resonates beyond mere audio-visual perception. It leaves a lasting impact in me. Growth #10 Ink on tracing paper 70 x 100 cm | 2014 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
FUNG MING CHIP (Hong Kong) I feel a kinship with Fung Ming Chip as we have similar backgrounds: we both were self-taught. It is not easy to understand his works although their charm is quite undeniable. In general, his works appear calm and quiet, just like the artist himself. His materials are very traditional: paper, ink, and water. And yet, his expression is always inventive, without completely leaving the tradition it is based upon. Ming is always experimenting, pushing the limits. He has created hundreds of unique calligraphic scripts. In his recent works, he combines a small work with a big one, creating a dialog between them. 13NS1-6 Chinese Ink on Paper 93.5 x 125 cm | 2013 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
LEE MAN SANG (Hong Kong) I met Lee Man Sang a long time ago when I needed a location to photograph my collection, ‘Earth on Earth’. A friend took me to Lee Man Sang’s studio out in the nature. It’s like a hidden paradise! The man himself appeared like a Buddha, coming out from the forest. He makes things using natural material he found around his studio. He makes sculptures, flutes, lamps... whatever inspires him. I think his works reflect where he comes from. Untitled Blackwood Carving 27 x 42 x 11 cm in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
PABLO POSADA PERNIKOFF (France) It was his glasswork that brought me to Pablo Posada Pernikoff. The lines and shapes in his works intrigued me. He is a mathematician, so the way he works is very methodical. Having been living in Japan for over 20 years, his elegant works show a kind of Japanese aesthetics, with a pleasing contrasting element. There is a balance between his glasswork and his works with paper that I admire. Wine Mixed-media on paper 35 x 48 cm (59 x 73 cm with frame) | 2012 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
SUN GUANGYI (China) I met Sun Guangyi quite a long time ago, in Beijing – a shy and humble artist. It was his first time exhibiting his works in Beijing, although he has shown his works in Munich before. His works really speak to me. They are peaceful, feels like a blessing. He is a devout Buddhist who always remembers his roots, full of respect to nature, and mature. I think he gives us valuable lessons through his works and his daily life. I feel lucky to have met him. Shangrila – Heaven 10 空谷寂寂 Chinese Ink on Paper 90 X 94 cm | 2010 in Revisit p.2 | 21 July - 9 Aug 2014 | a group exhibition
TISNA SANJAYA (Indonesia) I invited Tisna to join the ‘Indonesian Invasion’ exhibition in 2008 after I saw his works in an exhibition in Yogyakarta. There is a lot of fire in his works. He is a soulful artist who is also an art lecturer at the prestigious Institut Teknologi Bandung in West Java. He cares deeply about nature and the environment, about human being. He is a humanist, a dedicated activist fighting for the downtrodden. His art and his activism are interrelated; both are intense. I have high respect for him. HIROMI MIYAKITA (Japan) I met Hiromi through Akio Suzuki in January 2013. She visualised Akio’s sound performance so well. JUMALDI ALFI (Indonesia) Besides being a very talented and skillful artist with impressive accomplishment, Alfi for me is like a big brother. He has a very kind, caring heart. He is warm and trustworthy. He always shares and cares. He’s got a big social spirit. Over the years, he has introduced me to many artists in Yogyakarta. He loves to support his friends, not just thinking about himself. This is admirable. JESSIE LEUNG (Hong Kong) I first met Jessie at a group exhibition in JCCAC. I was attracted to her painting of chubby children around a tree done in a traditional Chinese technique. Her subject matters are interesting and unique. She loves to explore fatness, animals and insects. Her background as a nurse might have something to do with her fascination with the body. I found her work, especially the three-dimensional ones, to be very inviting. They beckon me to touch, to hug, to connect. He makes things happen. He might look pensive and intimidating to some people, but in reality he is a very friendly and humble person. He loves music and he does play it well. I think his musicality is reflected in his exuberant paintings as well. His paintings seem edgeless: they keep on going continuously long pass the canvas edges, long pass our sight.
